A balloon is expanded to create a cavity before being removed, and medical-grade bone cement is injected into the space. Once the cement hardens, it stabilizes the vertebra. The entire procedure often takes about one hour per treated vertebra, although this can vary depending on the number of fractures being addressed.

Potential Benefits of Kyphoplasty

Many patients experience significant pain relief within days of the procedure, with some reporting improvement much sooner. Stabilizing the fractured vertebra reduces painful movement within the bone, allowing patients to become more active and comfortable during daily activities.

In addition to pain relief, kyphoplasty may help improve posture by partially restoring vertebral height in some patients. Preventing further collapse of the vertebra may reduce spinal deformity, including excessive forward curvature commonly known as kyphosis. Improved mobility also allows many patients to resume physical therapy, strengthening exercises, and daily routines more quickly than prolonged bed rest alone.

Recovery After Kyphoplasty

Recovery is generally faster than many traditional spine surgeries because the procedure is minimally invasive. Many patients are encouraged to begin walking within hours after treatment and may resume light daily activities shortly afterward. Mild soreness around the incision sites is common but usually resolves within several days.

Although the treated fracture becomes stabilized, ongoing bone health remains essential, particularly for patients with osteoporosis. Physicians often recommend continuing osteoporosis treatment, engaging in weight-bearing exercise as appropriate, maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, and participating in fall prevention strategies to reduce the risk of future fractures. Risks and Considerations

Like any medical procedure, kyphoplasty carries potential risks, although serious complications are relatively uncommon when performed in appropriately selected patients. Possible risks include infection, bleeding, allergic reactions to medications, nerve injury, or leakage of bone cement outside the vertebra. Physicians take careful precautions throughout the procedure to minimize these risks.

It is also important to understand that kyphoplasty does not treat the underlying cause of osteoporosis or other bone diseases. Without appropriate management of bone health, patients remain at risk for additional fractures in other vertebrae.
